Accessibility
We want everyone to be able to use the light planner, look up plants and read the guides, including people who use a keyboard, a screen reader, zoom or other assistive technology. This page says what we aim for, what we have done, and what we know is not yet right.
Our commitment
Happy Flower Pot aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. Because the site is operated by Shabloool, which is based in Israel, we also aim to meet Israeli Standard 5568, the Israeli web accessibility standard, which is based on WCAG.
We have checked the site ourselves against these guidelines. It has not yet been audited by an outside accessibility expert.
What we have done
- Structure. Pages use standard HTML: a single main heading, headings in order, and marked header, navigation, main content and footer areas. The page language is set to English. Tables have proper column headers.
- Keyboard. Every link, button and form control can be reached and used with the keyboard alone. A "Skip to content" link is the first thing you reach with the Tab key, and the element in focus always has a clearly visible outline.
- Forms and results. Every field in the tools, the plant filters and the newsletter form has a label. The compass buttons in the Window Light Planner are standard radio buttons, and screen readers hear the full direction ("northeast"), not just the letters. When a tool's result changes, screen readers are told.
- Charts and colour. The month-by-month light chart has a text description that lists the light for every month, and a "Show the numbers" table with the same data. Pet safety is always written in words ("Cats: toxic"), never shown by colour or icon alone.
- Contrast. Body text, links and buttons have a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 against their background, in both the light and the dark theme. The dark theme follows your device setting.
- Images. The site has no photos. The logo and the small cat, dog and window icons are decorative and hidden from screen readers; the text next to them says the same thing.
- Small screens and zoom. The layout adapts to screens as narrow as 320 pixels, and pinch-to-zoom is never blocked. Wide tables scroll inside their own box on most pages; the exceptions are listed below.
- No moving or playing content. There is no video, audio or auto-playing media, and nothing on the page moves by itself. The site uses no animation, and its stylesheet switches off any transitions if your device is set to reduce motion.
Known limitations
- The outlines of text boxes and drop-down menus are a pale grey-green with a contrast of about 1.5:1 against the page, below the 3:1 that WCAG asks for. Every field has a visible label above it, and a field gets a strong outline when it is in focus.
- In the light theme, the grey "not listed" pet-safety label has a contrast ratio of about 4.0:1, just below the 4.5:1 that WCAG asks for.
- On a 320-pixel-wide screen, the tables in two guides (Are snake plants toxic to cats and dogs? and How much light your houseplants lose in winter) are wider than the screen, so the whole page scrolls sideways.
